Stan Curtis Piano Restoration

    The following photos show the steps taken in a complete restoration of a Grand Piano.

    Gallery Instructions:

        1.   To view the next photo, move your mouse to either the left or right of the photo and click the arrow that appears.

        2.   To move more quickly through the photos, click the word "Pictures" at the top right of the picture and then move your cursor to the left or right of the thumbnails until you find the photo you are interested in viewing, then click the word "Pictures" again to close the carousel.

1 - Interior of piano as originally received in my shop.

2 - Upper treble plate and wires in original condition.

3 - The plate and wires have been removed, exposing the bass end of the pinblock.

4 - The plate has been taken outside for cleaning, priming and painting.

Grand

5 - The tuning pins have been removed and the tuning pin bushings are being removed.

6 - The soundboard showing the original decal: Hamilton, made by Baldwin.

8 - Exterior of the piano after the finish has been removed.

9 - A close-up of the exterior.

10 - A stain coat has been applied to the exterior of the piano.

11 - The large portion of the lid is being sanded.

12 - The tuning pin holes are being center-punched on the pinblock for future drilling.

13 - The pinblock is being precision drilled at a 7 degree angle. Approximately 220 holes will be drilled.

14 - The drilling has been completed. The pinblock is resting in position in the piano.

15 - Preparing to install the tuning pin bushings. The plate and block have been installed.

16 - The wires are first coiled onto the tuning pins then the pins are driven into the block.

17 - The stringing process as it continues from the low to the upper treble.

18 - The stringing of the treble section has been completed.

19 - The entire piano has been strung. Note the new bass wires on the left side.

20 - This is the hammer rail as preparation begins for the installation of the new hammers.

21 - The new hammers are in the process of being installed.

22 - Refinishing has been completed and a new decal has been applied adn the piano has been reassembled.
