I recommend that a piano be tuned AT LEAST once each year.  It is preferable to have a piano tuned every six to twelve months.  The piano is made primarily of wood, and it is extremely affected by climatic changes. Changes in humidity result in the swelling and contracting of the wood, resulting in constant increases and decreases of wire tension, thereby continually changing the pitch of each wire, and the general tuning.  The proper wire tension must be consistently maintained.

MOST REPAIRS CAN BE DONE IN YOUR HOME. THESE REPAIRS WILL INVOLVE THE PIANO ACTION OR THE KEYS.

    THE PIANO ACTION

The action is the unit with all of the working parts.  The action includes the hammers and all of the moving wooden parts.  The piano action can be compared to the engine in a car.  Without the action there is no sound. Sluggish keys, notes that will not play, lack of uniformity of touch, are a few of the many indications that the action is in need of repair service or reconditioning. (See "Reconditioning")

Regulating is done in your home, often during the same appointment as the tuning. A separate appointment often necessary due to scheduling constrictions. Reconditioning of the piano action is usually necessary prior to regulating, especially with very old pianos.

Reconditioning if usually necessary with old pianos. This is especially true if there are a number of broken, loose, or sluggish parts, or if the action has not been serviced for many years. It is less costly to recondition an entire action than to schedule numerous service calls for small repairs. The action is removed from the piano and taken to my shop. This usually takes a couple of weeks.
